North East Fife MSP Willie Rennie swapped the rough and tumble of politics for the tumble driers at Fishers’ laundry in Cupar today as he experienced for himself what it’s like to work for a day with Scotland’s largest commercial laundry.
After a 6.00am start, Willie spent time checking in laundry and helping to sort it prior to the washing process; feeding items into one of Fishers’ automated ironers; and packing clean linen and towels in preparation for delivery to Fishers’ customers across Scotland. He also helped load one of Fishers’ 86 well-known delivery trucks before undertaking a delivery and collection run to customer, Piperdam Leisure Resort, near Dundee.
Cupar-based Fishers is Scotland’s market-leading textile rental and commercial laundry business and washes, dries and irons over two million items a week. Willie’s day with the company was part of a programme of “work experience days” that he has been undertaking with organisations in his constituency.
Willie Rennie commented:
“Fishers is a very significant contributor to the North East Fife economy and employs over 160 people locally. I already knew how crucial the work that the Fishers team is for their customers and now I’ve been able to see for myself the effort that goes into making that happen. It was great to hear direct from the team about what’s important to them and I only hope I didn’t slow them down too much!”
Michael Jones, Managing Director of Fishers, said:
“As our MSP, Willie has always shown great interest in Fishers and we were only too happy to accommodate when he asked to work with us for a day. An extra pair of hands is always very welcome!”
