EDF Renewables UK and ESB have appointed Calum Hume as Operations & Maintenance Manager at the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm newly opened Operations and Maintenance (O&M) base in Eyemouth, Berwickshire.
Following 23 years in gas turbine engineering, Calum moved into the renewables sector in 2008, where he was O&M Manager Offshore & Onshore Wind fleet across the UK & Ireland at SSE. He has spent the last three years in Taiwan with SRE, sharing knowledge, learnings and experience with Taiwanese colleagues on existing and new build wind farms but has now returned to Scotland to manage the O&M team at Eyemouth.
The O&M base, officially opened on 25 January 2023, includes a 1,040 square metre, three storey operations and maintenance building, alongside a 538 square metre storage warehouse. The base houses a high-tech control room with staff from NNG and its Tier 1 contractor Siemens Gamesa from which the operation of the 450 megawatt (MW) wind farm will be monitored when it is commissioned in 2024.
It will monitor its low carbon electricity output, wind speed, turbine performance and all radio communications. The control room team will also monitor and control the movement of wind farm vessels into and out of Eyemouth Harbour and the site of the wind farm itself, which is located 15.5 kilometres off the coast of Fife.
Calum said: “I am excited to return home and be part of NnG and Scotland’s renewable future. The NnG offshore wind farm reached an exciting milestone last month with the opening of the O&M building and we’re fully focused on continuing that momentum with the project due to be operational by 2024. It also means up to 50 high quality jobs for Eyemouth Harbour for the 25-year lifespan of the wind farm and we have seven technicians, all based within 30 minutes of Eyemouth, recruited and ready to start this month. It’s an incredibly important time for the project and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Matthias Haag, NnG Project Director, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Calum to the role of Operations Manager. He brings a wealth of knowledge and a diverse understanding of the sector which will be a huge assist to the team in Eyemouth and to the whole NnG project.”
NnG, which is owned by EDF Renewables UK and ESB, will supply enough low carbon electricity for around 375,000* homes and has a capacity of around 450MW of low carbon energy. It will offset over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The project will be fully operational in 2024.
